Last year I searched Autoscout for R170s like mine and most of them were being sold for around 3,000 -5,000 euros.. I checked today again, and cars with 40,000km like mine  are being sold for a gargantuan and totally undeserved 10,000! Could this shaky, small, loud, annoying car be worth that? Could it be *gasp* appreciating?

Kinja'd!!!

I mean... 10,000 euros for this? It’s madness!

Not in NA . Here, likely the only one with any potential would be the SLK32, and that’ll be a while from now.

Asking price and sales price can also be like day and night.

I suppose so... part of why i find it odd is that those are everywhere around here, a lot of people that bought SLKs because they couldn’t afford SLs

It was handed down to me. Originally bought by my grandfather

I think it sold to a similar demographic here - affluent middle- agers and oldsters who wanted a MB roadster but didn’t want to lay down 80K+ in 1998 dollars for one. Today, both this and the R129 are quite affordable, and for the latter, none but the very best cars seem to be in demand .

Not here in the US. Only the 32 AMG has a little interest in them, but otherwise most are meh

The suggestion on all mercedes SL and cabrio is buy the best you can find.

The top 10% are always ridiculous in price while just a few things can doom any one of them.

I like them, just they aren’t valuable.

I know there are pretentious flippers trying to sell to stupid new money, but I think one should be able to find an excellent (non AMG) 129 for no more than 20K all in.  Definitely don’t buy the $2500 car unless you have time and skill.

A couple years ago, my local dealer had a 98 SL500, sport and pano, something like 25K miles on it, pristine one owner car, they wanted 19K for it.

Definitely madness. They weren’t super reliable cars to begin with, and they didn’t age well compared to their contemporaries (especially the 986 Boxster).
